The History of The Dyscovery Centre
The Dyscovery Centre was opened in Cardiff in 1997 and obtained initial support, including the provision of premises, for a three year period from Healthcall Limited until June 2000. It is now an independent organisation.
The Centre was primarily set up due to the lack of provision and co-ordination of services for children with Dyspraxia in the UK. Over 60% of patients referred to the centre originate from the NHS and the Department of Employment.
One in ten children suffer from this common condition that affects them in their daily lives at school and at home.
The Centre has a multi-disciplinary team of health and educational professionals. This includes speech and language therapy, educational psychology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, counselling, behavioural optometry, medical direction as well as access to a paediatrician.
The Dyscovery Centre is unique in the UK and sees children and adults both from as far afield as Equador, Hong Kong and across the UK.
To date the centre has successfully treated over 1000 children and trained well over 10000 health and educational professionals.
The team at the Centre has been instrumental in setting up university accredited training programmes in Dyspraxia across the UK to health and educational professionals as well as supporting parents and individuals.
